Microsoft has agreed to lease a data center site in Narvik, within the Arctic Circle in Norway, originally prepared for OpenAI's "Stargate" project. Microsoft will rent an additional 30,000 NVIDIA Vera Rubin chips from Nscale to support its AI model training and inference operations. Previously, Microsoft had committed to investing $6.2 billion in the campus, and this lease represents a further expansion of that plan. OpenAI had held discussions regarding the computational resources at the campus but ultimately failed to reach an agreement with Nscale. Meanwhile, OpenAI has suspended a similar project in the UK, citing high energy costs and stringent regulations. Microsoft is accelerating its data center layout (layout) to meet market demand and plans to acquire 3,200 acres of land in Wyoming to expand its data center capacity.
