Residents of Port Washington, Wisconsin, have become the first community in the United States to restrict tax incentives for data center projects through a referendum. According to unofficial results, approximately 66% of voters supported the proposal. The referendum was triggered by a large-scale AI data center project underway in the area, which involves an investment of about $15 billion and partnerships with OpenAI and Oracle. However, concerns have arisen among residents regarding issues such as noise, freshwater consumption, and rising electricity costs associated with the data center's construction. Although the referendum will not affect projects already under construction, it sets a barrier for similar future endeavors.
