On April 10, 2026, the French government's digital department, DINUM, made an announcement stating its intention to transition from Microsoft Windows to Linux-based workstations. This move is aimed at gradually reducing France's dependence on U.S. commercial software. The plan includes the adoption of localized or "distinctly national" Linux distributions. Among the departments involved in this initiative are the Directorate General for Enterprises and the National Cybersecurity Agency. To carry out this open-source/domestic software substitution, the relevant departments will adopt a "three-phase" strategy. They aim to finalize software solutions, including workstation systems and antivirus software, by this autumn. In the meantime, around 80,000 employees of the National Health Insurance have already made the switch to local office suites.
