Western Digital has unveiled its latest hard drive technology and product roadmap, along with disclosing the technical development roadmap for HDDs (mechanical hard drives). The company plans to launch a 40TB UltraSMR hard drive based on ePMR technology in the second half of this year, a product that has already received certification from two hyperscale data center customers. Western Digital also plans to expand the capacity of ePMR hard drives to the 60TB range and advance the mass production process of HAMR hard drives, with customer certification expected to be completed and mass production to begin in 2027, and a 100TB HAMR hard drive to be launched in 2029. Over the next few years, ePMR and HAMR technologies will develop in parallel, with the next-generation ePMR hard drives drawing on the achievements of HAMR technology without increasing power consumption. This strategy will offer customers greater flexibility. In terms of financial performance, Western Digital's revenue in Q2FY26 exceeded $3 billion, with an increase in shipped capacity. The company has signed procurement agreements for the current year with its top seven customers, with almost all of its 2026 production capacity already sold out, and some agreements even extending to 2027 and 2028. In the previous fiscal quarter, the price per TB of hard drives increased slightly, while costs decreased. UltraSMR hard drives accounted for more than half of the shipped capacity of nearline mechanical hard drives, while HAMR and next-generation ePMR hard drives have also initiated validation work with leading customers.
