According to individuals with insider knowledge of the situation, SoftBank Group has put an end to the talks regarding the acquisition of the U.S.-based data center operator Switch. This move has dealt a significant blow to founder Masayoshi Son's ambitious plan to construct the 'Stargate' AI infrastructure.
In the past few months, Son has been vigorously advocating for this acquisition deal, which is estimated to be worth around $50 billion. His intention was to capitalize on Switch's energy - efficient data center network. By doing so, he aimed to offer computational support for his colossal $500 billion 'Stargate' project and provide assistance to his partner, OpenAI.
Nevertheless, earlier this month, Son conceded that a complete takeover was no longer a viable option. As a result, he scrapped the plans to make a relevant announcement that was initially set for January.
