Microsoft has recently come out in the open, confirming that it is the previously unnamed company pushing forward with a large-scale data center project in the Charter Township of Lowell, Michigan, in the United States. This project has run into a wall of opposition from local residents and business owners. The reasons for their discontent are twofold: the high level of secrecy surrounding the project and the potential environmental repercussions it could bring.
It's worth noting that this isn't the only major data center initiative in Michigan. Earlier, both OpenAI and Oracle made public their intentions to construct a data center campus in Saline Township, Michigan. This proposed campus would have a capacity that surpasses 1 gigawatt. Construction is slated to kick off in early 2026. The project is a massive one, with a multi-billion-dollar investment on the line. Moreover, it promises to generate a significant number of job opportunities for the local community.
However, the expansion of data centers isn't all smooth sailing. The energy and water consumption associated with these projects has become a hot-button issue. Across multiple regions in the United States, this has sparked a wave of opposition. As a result, several billion-dollar data center projects have been either postponed or scrapped altogether.
