On November 10, foreign media reported that the world's two largest data center developers have projects situated at NVIDIA Corporation's headquarters. However, due to power supply issues from local utility companies, these projects may lie vacant for several years. Santa Clara, California, is the home of NVIDIA, the world's largest supplier of artificial intelligence chips. In 2019, Digital Realty Trust submitted an application to construct a data center there. Nearly six years on, though, this development project remains little more than an empty shell, still waiting for a full power supply to be activated.
Nearby, Stack Infrastructure also has a 48 - megawatt project that remains unoccupied, as the municipal utility company Silicon Valley Power is in the process of upgrading its capacity. The current situations of these two facilities underscore a significant challenge confronting both the U.S. tech sector and the broader economy. While the boom in cloud computing and AI has driven a sharp increase in demand for data centers, securing access to electricity has emerged as the biggest obstacle. This is mainly attributable to the aging power infrastructure, the sluggish pace of constructing new transmission lines, and a range of regulatory and permitting barriers.
