According to a report from the Zhitong Finance APP, the Australian government has not mandated quantifiable water conservation measures in the approval process for data center constructions. This has raised public apprehension about the potential repercussions on residential water availability. Since extending its planning authority in 2021, the New South Wales government has greenlit 10 applications for data center constructions. These projects involve major players such as Microsoft, Amazon, and AirTrunk (a subsidiary of the Blackstone Group). The total estimated construction outlay for these projects stands at AUD 6.6 billion, with an annual water consumption projected at 9.6 billion liters. This figure is nearing 2% of Sydney's peak water supply capacity.
