Recently, rumors have surfaced suggesting that Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the Greater China Region is considering implementing layoffs between late September and October. The projected layoff ratio is estimated to be around 20% to 30%, a move that is expected to significantly affect second-tier teams. Given that AWS currently employs fewer than 1,700 individuals in this region, the anticipated number of job cuts is estimated to range from 300 to 500.
Earlier, in July, the AWS Shanghai AI Research Institute was already dissolved. Amazon's CEO, Andy Jassy, has remarked that the proliferation of generative AI applications will precipitate structural changes in enterprise human resource management, ultimately leading to a reduction in the overall workforce. At present, several departments within AWS have already carried out layoffs, affecting hundreds of employees.
However, on September 15th, an AWS spokesperson refuted the rumors of layoffs in the Greater China Region, asserting that the reports were grossly inaccurate. The spokesperson emphasized that the company remains committed to actively recruiting talent in China.
