BIT Team Achieves Major Milestone in Next-Gen Internet Architecture Research

Recently, a research team headed by Professor Song Tian from the School of Cyberspace Security at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) has achieved a significant breakthrough in the realm of next-generation internet architecture and high-performance network processing technology. Their research paper, entitled "PtCAM: Scalable High-Speed Name Prefix Lookup Using TCAM," has been fully accepted for presentation at the main conference of ACM SIGCOMM 2025. ACM SIGCOMM is a premier academic conference in the field of international computer networking. This conference is highly selective, admitting only around 60 papers globally each year. The research chosen is often lauded for its "potential to be featured in textbooks." This paper represents the first time Beijing Institute of Technology has been selected as the primary institution for the main conference of ACM SIGCOMM, with all three authors being faculty members and students from the university.

The PtCAM architecture, proposed by Professor Song Tian's team, integrates the Binary Patricia Trie structure with ternary content-addressable memory (TCAM) devices. This innovative combination scales internet routing tables from the million level to the billion level without requiring the replacement of existing hardware, marking a three-order-of-magnitude improvement. Experimental results show that PtCAM achieves remarkable advancements in scalability and query performance, with a throughput rate nearing the theoretical limit of TCAM devices. It can be seamlessly deployed on existing equipment, offering both theoretical innovation and practical commercial value.

This accomplishment provides efficient solutions for next-generation internet routers, content distribution gateways, and edge network computing platforms. It is anticipated to propel China's independent technological innovation in the field of next-generation internet infrastructure. Professor Song Tian and Special Associate Researcher Yang Yating are set to attend the conference in Portugal, where they will deliver an oral presentation. This research has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
