On August 5, Taiwanese media outlets reported a suspected technology leak within Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). It has been revealed that former employees allegedly accessed and illegally obtained critical technologies related to the 2-nanometer chip process during their tenure at the company. Consequently, the individuals involved have been terminated from their positions. From July 25 to 28, Taiwan's regulatory agency summoned and arrested three engineers implicated in the incident, while also conducting a search at Tokyo Electron, a Japanese vendor. The development of TSMC's 2-nanometer process technology entails extreme difficulty and significant investment costs, making it a field pursued by only a handful of companies, including TSMC, Samsung, Intel, and Japan's Rapidus. TSMC anticipates achieving mass production of 2-nanometer chips by the end of this year, a technology that is globally recognized as one of the most advanced in chip manufacturing.
