On August 5, the technical director of Tesla supplier Panasonic Holdings, Tatsuo Ogawa, shared his insights on solid-state batteries. Ogawa, who serves as Panasonic's Chief Technology Officer, expressed his belief that solid-state batteries will find it challenging to compete with the ever-improving lithium-ion batteries in the electric vehicle industry, forecasting a constrained market share for the former. He stated that solid-state batteries are better suited as niche products for applications like drones and electric drills, rather than for automobiles. Speaking from the research and development headquarters in Osaka, Ogawa remarked: "Solid-state batteries lack the capacity to replace lithium-ion batteries, and their usage will be highly restricted. I do not envision this technology as a revolutionary shift." Furthermore, Ogawa cast doubt on whether solid-state batteries can truly capture the market, even if they manage to overcome technical hurdles and large-scale manufacturing challenges. He highlighted the continuous advancement in lithium-ion battery technology, using BYD's fast-charging system as an example to demonstrate that solid-state batteries are not the sole solution.
