The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States is set to vote on new regulations prohibiting the connection of submarine communication cables incorporating Chinese technology or equipment to the United States. This measure aims to thwart alleged "Chinese espionage activities." FCC Chairman Brendan Carr underscored the criticality of submarine cables and portrayed this step as an essential defense mechanism to safeguard American submarine cables against threats posed by foreign adversaries. Upon enactment, these regulations will directly impact Chinese submarine cable manufacturers. Notably, while existing cables linking to the U.S. will remain unaffected, future projects will be subject to these restrictions.
