On July 13, 2025, China Unicom unveiled its eSIM mobile phone service activation platform, heralding the imminent revival of domestic eSIM services. Prior to this, in 2023, the three leading telecommunication providers had temporarily halted the provision of eSIM watch dual-terminal and standalone eSIM card services due to necessary business maintenance and upgrades. While China Unicom's latest initiative is still in the commercial trial phase and necessitates offline processing, it has already garnered significant attention. eSIM technology seamlessly integrates the SIM card into the device's motherboard, eliminating the need for physical insertion and removal. Its compact size enhances device design and facilitates the seamless binding of multiple carrier accounts with one-click switching capabilities. Leading manufacturers such as Huawei and Apple have embraced this technology, accelerating the trend towards sleeker and lighter devices and revolutionizing the digital ecosystem. Currently, eSIM technology is predominantly utilized in smartwatches, the Internet of Things, and other sectors. However, the full-scale launch of eSIM services for mobile phones requires addressing key issues, including tariff regulations.
