On July 15, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced its intention to resume exporting MI308 chips to China, following a favorable indication from the U.S. Department of Commerce that it would authorize the sale. This move echoes a similar decision made by the U.S. government concerning NVIDIA's semiconductor products. On Tuesday, an AMD spokesperson revealed that the U.S. Department of Commerce had informed AMD that the license application for the MI308 chips had entered the review stage, marking a significant departure from policies enforced during the Trump administration. AMD had previously anticipated that export restrictions on the MI308 chips would incur a financial loss of approximately $800 million for the company.
In contrast, NVIDIA anticipates a surge in revenue amounting to billions of dollars this year, following the U.S. government's approval for the export of its H20 AI chips to China.
