For the fourth consecutive year, global CO2 emissions from the energy sector attained a new peak, reaching 37.4 billion tons last year, marking a 1.1% increase. This surge occurred despite renewable energy usage also achieving an all-time high. The persistent escalation in fossil fuel consumption is the primary driver behind this increase in emissions. Furthermore, last year was the hottest on record, with global temperatures surpassing pre-industrial levels by a notable 1.5°C for the first time. The interplay between extreme weather conditions and fossil fuel use feeds into a vicious cycle, intensifying the global warming trend.
