Apple and Meta have been penalized for breaching the EU's Digital Markets Act. On April 23, the EU imposed a fine of 500 million euros on Apple and 200 million euros on Meta for failing to adhere to the anti-steering provisions outlined in the Act. Apple was sanctioned for hindering developers from directing users to alternative channels outside the App Store for discounted services. Conversely, Meta faced penalties for not offering users a less personalized yet functionally equivalent version of its platform and for failing to provide users with the right to freely consent to the combined use of their personal data. Apple now has a month to align its App Store rules with the EU's requirements; otherwise, it will be subject to ongoing fines.
