NVIDIA's latest GPU driver, version 576.40, eliminates the necessity for the processor's POPCNT instruction. This significant change allows older processors, such as those from the Intel Core 2 series, to operate seamlessly with the latest RTX 50 series graphics cards. Previously, the absence of POPCNT instruction support often caused system crashes when attempting to combine these older and newer hardware components. With this restriction now lifted, users with older hardware have expanded options for upgrading their graphics cards. While pairing high-end GPUs with outdated processors is generally not advisable, technically, this combination has become feasible, presenting new avenues for retro system enthusiasts or those exploring cross-generational compatibility. As of yet, NVIDIA has not offered an official explanation for this change.
