China has recently imposed export controls on seven categories of medium and heavy rare earths, prompting a flurry of activity among US companies seeking to establish alternative supply chains. To address the ensuing rare earth shortage, Western Digital has partnered with Microsoft and other companies to initiate a pioneering program focused on recycling rare earths. Through this program, they have achieved a remarkable recovery rate of up to 90% for rare earth elements and other metals from discarded hard drives, aiming to minimize resource wastage and lessen environmental impact.
