Seagate has recently unveiled a report that underscores the environmental benefits of hard disk drives (HDDs). The report conducts a comparative analysis of HDDs, solid-state drives (SSDs), and tape as storage media, using three key metrics: CO2 emissions over a five-year lifecycle, average CO2 emissions per terabyte (TB) of storage capacity, and average annual CO2 emissions per TB. The findings indicate that HDDs outperform both SSDs and tape in terms of environmental impact, particularly when it comes to cold data storage. Here, HDDs excel due to their long-term data stability and high cost-effectiveness.

Despite the diminishing market share of HDDs, this report underscores their continued significant value and eco-friendliness, with CO2 emissions as low as 0.6% compared to SSDs.
