Malaysia has recently emerged as a significant importer of computing systems and components, witnessing a dramatic surge in trade volumes. This uptick coincides with the United States' imposition of heightened tariffs and stricter export controls on AI chips destined for China, fueling speculation among external observers. According to data, in March 2025, the total value of computer system products imported by Malaysia from Taiwan, China, amounted to $1.874 billion, marking a 3.66-fold increase year-on-year and a staggering 550-fold jump compared to March 2023. Imports of computer components have likewise witnessed a remarkable upswing.
