Tom's Hardware reports that user ivan6953 encountered a sudden burning smell coming from their RTX 5090 graphics card while gaming on Battlefield 5. Despite consuming between 500 and 520 watts of power, the graphics card could not be promptly shut down upon detection of the unusual odor. The incident resulted in the melting of the graphics card's power connector socket and connecting cable. Upon investigation, it was determined that the issue likely stemmed from the user's use of a third-party power cable from the Moddiy brand, rather than a defect in the graphics card itself. Notably, the user had successfully used the same cable with an RTX 4090 graphics card for two years without any issues. Unfortunately, this incident also caused damage to the user's ASUS ROG Loki power supply. Despite NVIDIA's prior assurance that the power connector design of the RTX 50 series graphics cards had been optimized to minimize the risk of overheating and melting, the user will still seek warranty assistance from NVIDIA and ASUS. However, they do not harbor high expectations for a favorable resolution due to the involvement of a third-party cable.
