The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) of Japan and Intel Corporation have announced a partnership to pioneer the next generation of quantum computers. Set to commence in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, in spring 2025, the project aims to establish an industrially feasible quantum computing system comprising tens of thousands of qubits by the early 2030s. Leveraging Intel's existing Tunnel Falls quantum processor, AIST and Intel will jointly delve into the research of novel materials and implementation technologies, enhancing refrigeration techniques and low-temperature electronics essential for qubit control. Additionally, Intel, in collaboration with AIST, will establish a chip R&D hub in Japan, equipped with state-of-the-art extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) equipment.
