On February 1, foreign media outlets reported that U.S. President Trump declared that the United States might impose tariffs on imported computer chips, pharmaceuticals, steel, aluminum, copper, oil, and natural gas by mid-February. Trump further indicated his intention to extend these tariffs to the European Union, though specific dates and tax rates were not disclosed. It appears that these proposed tariffs would be in addition to the 25% tariff already imposed on goods from Canada and Mexico. Earlier, the White House Press Secretary had confirmed the imposition of a 25% tariff on goods from those two countries, effective from February 1.
