Nintendo has announced that, effective March 25th, 2025, its Japanese eShop and My Nintendo Store will discontinue acceptance of payments made via overseas credit cards or PayPal accounts. Consequently, users will be required to utilize credit cards issued in Japan or Japanese PayPal accounts for all transactions. This follows a similar move by Sony's PSN, which previously restricted the use of overseas credit cards and PayPal accounts for game purchases, requiring Japanese PayPal accounts to be linked to a valid Japanese mobile phone number to be associated with the PSN. Nintendo's decision may be aimed at streamlining the payment process and enhancing the local user experience, albeit it may also present challenges for overseas gamers.
