The United States government has awarded $590 million to Moderna to accelerate the research and development of avian flu vaccines, with the objective of bolstering the nation's preparedness against human avian influenza infections. This allocation augments the $176 million provided by the US Department of Health and Human Services last year, which was utilized to finalize the late-stage development and testing of an mRNA-based H5N1 avian influenza pre-pandemic vaccine. Moderna has announced that the new funding will facilitate the expansion of clinical research into up to five additional influenza pandemic subtype vaccines.
