The UK-based semiconductor IP firm Imagination Technologies has decided to halt the development of RISC-V CPU cores, redirecting its efforts towards investments in graphics, artificial intelligence (AI), and edge computing. Despite this shift, the company remains committed to supporting the RISC-V ecosystem, with aspirations to become the preferred supplier of RISC-V GPUs. Previously, Imagination was the owner of the MIPS CPU architecture, but it has since divested from those related businesses. In August 2021, Imagination announced its foray into the RISC-V CPU market, culminating in the release of its first commercial RISC-V core, the RTXM-2200, at the end of 2022. Just over a year later, in April 2024, the company unveiled another RISC-V product, the APXM-6200.
