Incoming U.S. President Trump has garnered widespread interest by inquiring about TSMC's potential investment in a 2nm advanced process facility in the United States. On January 10, 2025, Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, Shen Jong-chin, highlighted that the investment for such a 2nm process facility is estimated to be in the range of $28-30 billion, an exorbitant sum. Despite the presence of customers in the U.S., Shen emphasized that TSMC must carefully weigh its options, as companies are often hesitant to relocate unless the returns are exceptionally high.
