Open-source project uses NPU instead of GPU to render Windows 11 desktop — refresh rate currently just 2–3Hz, with a 30Hz target

Developer team labscommunity has launched an open-source NPU driver prototype called npu-driver that enables the NPU, rather than the graphics card, to render the Windows 11 desktop. The driver has been tested on devices equipped with Intel Panther Lake processors, and basic functionality is now available. It also supports automatic fallback to GPU rendering when needed or in the event of a failure. The project demonstrates that the NPU can take over desktop composition without the application or the desktop compositor being aware of it. At present, the research prototype achieves an actual refresh rate of only 2 to 3Hz — far below the 30Hz target — but it can significantly reduce GPU usage and free up GPU resources for other tasks. NPUs are increasingly becoming a key component of consumer-grade processors, and such dedicated acceleration units are expected to remain in place over the long term.
