On October 27, driven by the AI boom, demand for tech products has surged. Preliminary estimates released by the Bank of Korea on Tuesday showed that South Korea's economy grew by 1.0% in the third quarter, higher than the market expectation of 0.7%. Exports increased by 2.3%, mainly due to strong shipments of semiconductors, machinery, and electrical equipment. Investment in chip manufacturing equipment drove a 4.1% increase in equipment investment. However, private consumption declined by 0.2%, reflecting households' reduced spending on goods and services. Government consumption grew by 1.9%. Persistent inflation and rising household debt remain major concerns for South Korean policymakers. The Bank of Korea expects exports and investment to maintain rapid growth, driven by the strong performance of the semiconductor industry, while the pace of consumption recovery may accelerate. Meanwhile, the bank also warned of financial stability risks, including soaring housing prices in Seoul and increasing household debt.
