A team of scientists hailing from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States has successfully developed an innovative on-chip optical storage platform. This cutting-edge platform is capable of storing photons for durations exceeding 1 microsecond, and it can also store multiple photons at the same time. Leveraging the unique properties of thin-film lithium niobate and erbium atoms, the technology achieves temporary photon storage through an ingenious mechanism known as an 'atomic frequency comb.' This breakthrough is poised to significantly propel the large-scale production of quantum memories and foster the development of quantum information processing technologies. The relevant research findings have been published in the esteemed journal Nano Letters.
