On October 11, Musk stated that given his companies' expertise in manufacturing custom equipment, they are likely to "find a better method for chip manufacturing than anyone else." Speaking to customers and investors outside the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, Musk said that although he currently "doesn't know how to manufacture microchips, [he] will work to figure it out." On Saturday, during a live-streamed appearance at the X Takeover event, Musk mentioned that when visiting competitors' facilities, he did not see much custom equipment, while his own companies have extensive experience in manufacturing such equipment, which could help improve manufacturing processes. Musk said, "This is arguably one of the hardest things to do in the world. I don't want to be complacent, but I think we are likely to find a better method for chip manufacturing. To be honest, I don't know how long it will take—it could take several years."
