On September 1, reports emerged indicating that the ongoing boom in AI infrastructure development has fueled a sharp rise in demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). This surge is putting pressure on the supply of traditional Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM), exacerbating the existing memory shortage. According to South Korean media sources, Samsung's Memory Business Division has committed approximately 70% of its production capacity to long-term contracts extending to 2031. Key clients securing these contracts include major tech giants such as NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Google. However, the intense competition for HBM has made it challenging for these tech companies to obtain the full contract volumes, subsequently driving up spot market prices.
