According to reports, an undisclosed official from the ruling party has disclosed that the United States has urged South Korea to invest in the construction of memory chip manufacturing facilities within the U.S. borders, with the aim of securing a reliable and steady supply of chips. This topic surfaced during investment discussions when South Korea's Minister of Industry paid a recent visit to Washington. Behind closed doors, U.S. officials voiced their discontent with South Korea's initiative to allocate 800 trillion won towards the development of the Honam semiconductor industry hub, perceiving it as a sign that while the South Korean government robustly backs local chip investments, it exhibits a more cautious stance when it comes to investing in the U.S. market. However, the South Korean government contends that the U.S.'s call for semiconductor investment is distinct from the $350 billion investment pledge made by the two nations the previous year. South Korea is poised to unveil the inaugural project under its U.S. investment framework in September.
