On August 21, South Korean media outlets reported that SK Hynix is considering a significant overseas expansion, with plans to set up a memory chip production base in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The investment for this project is rumored to reach tens of trillions of Korean won. If realized, this move would represent the first instance of a South Korean semiconductor company establishing a large-scale local production facility in Japan, carrying substantial strategic implications.
In response, SK Hynix clarified that while any location with suitable infrastructure could be under consideration for evaluation, no definitive decision has been made regarding the establishment of a plant in Japan or the specific site selection.
