It turns out that expired credit cards are not entirely foolproof. A research team from the University of Massachusetts Amherst has uncovered a new vulnerability that allows attackers to "resurrect" expired Visa contactless credit cards. This means that transactions can be carried out without the cardholder's awareness. Presented at the 2026 USENIX Security Symposium, this study sheds light on real-world security risks associated with contactless payment verification systems, moving beyond mere theoretical speculation.
