On August 19th, it was reported that influenced by the technology and energy sectors, Southeast Asian economies performed differently in the second quarter. Vietnam continued to lead, becoming the fastest-growing major economy in Southeast Asia, while Thailand experienced weak growth. Malaysia and Singapore ranked second and third, respectively, benefiting from robust demand for components such as semiconductors in the global technology supply chain. Similar to Thailand, the Philippines was affected by rising energy costs due to the Middle East conflict, while a decline in infrastructure spending further dragged down its economic growth. In contrast, economies with key companies in the AI-related technology supply chain demonstrated greater resilience, while those reliant on expensive imported energy gradually lost growth momentum. Currently, policymakers in Southeast Asian countries are facing challenges in protecting businesses and consumers from oil price fluctuations without hindering economic growth. Economists from DBS Bank pointed out that the growth disparities among countries depend on their domestic resilience in responding to the Middle East crisis and their reliance on technology exports in trade structures.
