The most recent quarterly 13F filings released by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) showcase that in the second quarter of this year, institutional investors made only marginal modifications to their holdings in pivotal sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, and large-cap tech stocks. There was no pronounced inclination towards substantial one-sided investments. A detailed examination of 13F filings from 6,371 pension funds, hedge funds, wealth management firms, and other institutions uncovered that the number of institutions boosting their positions was nearly on par with those trimming them, although the latter group marginally outnumbered the former. When it comes to super-tech stocks, exemplified by the 'Magnificent Seven'—comprising Microsoft and Meta Platforms—around 44% of the reporting institutions pared down their holdings, while 42% chose to initiate new positions or augment their stakes. The remaining institutions did not reveal any alterations in their shareholdings. These tech behemoths have been instrumental in propelling the stock market's upward trajectory. The 13F data further reveals that institutional investors sustained their optimism towards the semiconductor sector at the close of the second quarter, with 48% of the reported funds emerging as net buyers and merely 34.5% as net sellers.
