A research team from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany has unveiled their groundbreaking findings in the journal Science. For the first time, they have successfully utilized orbital current directly for reading and writing information, eliminating the necessity for conversion to spin current. Remarkably, the signal strength generated by this method is a staggering hundred times greater than that of conventional spintronic devices. This breakthrough opens up fresh avenues for the development of memory and processors with significantly reduced energy consumption.
