On April 13, reports surfaced indicating that Akizawa Ryusei, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, has recently greenlit an extra 631.5 billion yen (equivalent to roughly US$3.95 billion) in research and development aid for the Japanese semiconductor company Rapidus in the fiscal year 2026. This move elevates the cumulative support extended from fiscal years 2022 to 2026 to a staggering 2.354 trillion yen. Furthermore, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry also disclosed its plan to allocate up to 76 billion yen in financial backing to Fujitsu and IBM Japan. These two entities are collaborating on the development of energy-efficient AI semiconductors, with the manufacturing process anticipated to be outsourced to Rapidus.
