Samsung has made a notable leap forward in semiconductor manufacturing, with its 2-nanometer process yield recently exceeding 60%. This marks a significant increase, having more than tripled over the past two quarters, and bringing it in line with TSMC’s yield performance. At present, Samsung is employing the 2-nanometer process to manufacture chips for the Exynos 2600 smartphone processor. Although the yield for this particular chip has not yet hit the 50% mark, both its performance and production efficiency have shown improvement. Given the challenges associated with boosting yields for the 2-nanometer process, achieving a higher yield is instrumental in reducing costs and securing more orders. Samsung has already secured a substantial $16.5 billion contract with Tesla. If Samsung can sustain a consistently high 2-nanometer yield, it is poised to attract additional customers and further close the market share gap with TSMC.
