As per the most recent report from market research company Counterpoint Research, the global prices of DRAM and NAND flash memory have witnessed a substantial upswing around the Lunar New Year period, a phenomenon attributed to the prevailing supply-demand imbalance. Specifically, prices of numerous memory products have surged by more than 130% on a month-on-month basis. Notably, the price of 64GB server DDR5 RDIMM memory modules has climbed by 150% month-on-month, while 12GB mobile LPDDR5X memory prices have risen by 130%. Similarly, 8GB DDR4 SO-DIMM memory prices for laptops have spiked by 180%, and NAND flash memory products have also experienced price hikes ranging from 130% to 150%. The research institution anticipates that the supply shortage will continue to plague the market until at least the latter half of 2027. Despite the plans of major manufacturers, such as Samsung and SK Hynix, to embark on significant capacity expansions, the augmented production capacity will not become operational until the second half of 2027. Furthermore, memory suppliers are halting the production of customized HBM for AI-specific semiconductors and are instead pivoting towards general-purpose memory. The institution opines that, given the robust procurement demand from cloud service providers, the prospects of memory prices experiencing a downturn in the latter half of this year remain slim.
