Intel recently released the XeSS 3.0 SDK development toolkit on GitHub, introducing multi-frame generation technology and an updated frame generation model. However, despite Intel engineer Anton Kaplanyan's 2021 promise that XeSS would be open-source, four years have passed without fulfillment of this commitment. Neither XeSS 1.0, 2.0, nor the latest 3.0 version has delivered on the open-source promise, with the source code for core operational components remaining undisclosed. Currently, Intel still provides only pre-compiled Windows dynamic link library files, such as libxess.dll, on GitHub, leaving developers unable to access editable source code. In contrast, AMD's FSR technology adopts a more open approach, allowing developers to review and modify the source code. This release of XeSS 3.0 primarily targets Windows developers and gamers, without altering Intel's long-standing closed-source distribution model.
