On February 27, 2026, the Japanese government announced that it would inject 250 billion yen (approximately US$1.6 billion) into chipmaker Rapidus, with the funds to be made available over the next two fiscal years. This move brings Japan one step closer to its goal of providing a total of 3 trillion yen in support for Rapidus, aiming to help it mass-produce 2-nanometer logic chips and challenge TSMC's industry position. In addition to government investment, Rapidus has also secured 167.6 billion yen in funding from around 30 private companies, with plans to commence mass production in March 2028.
