In a recent interview, Liu Weiping, the Chairman of Empyrean, took us on a retrospective journey through the three-decade evolution of China's domestic Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry. He traced its humble beginnings with the advent of the 'Panda System' in 1988 to its current state, where it has achieved breakthroughs across the entire supply chain. Liu highlighted that the domestic EDA sector has traversed four key phases: starting from scratch, enduring a period of strenuous growth, undergoing a state-sponsored resurgence, and finally witnessing rapid expansion in recent years. Despite notable advancements, Liu acknowledged that the industry still grapples with challenges such as fragmented toolchains, technological gaps, and an immature industrial ecosystem. To address these issues, Liu proposed a dual-pronged approach: in the short term, concentrate on overcoming full-chain obstacles, while in the long term, capitalize on the potential of AI integration and embrace innovative strategies. By fostering collaborative efforts among policymakers, industry stakeholders, and investors, Liu believes that the domestic EDA sector can pave the way for a future marked by self-reliance, technological sophistication, and a flourishing ecosystem.
