On February 5th, sources with inside knowledge disclosed that TSMC is set to commence the production of advanced 3-nanometer chips in Japan. This strategic move represents a substantial enhancement of its manufacturing blueprint in Japan and mirrors the technological aspirations of Japanese Prime Minister Tomomi Inada.

As the go-to chipmaker for industry giants like NVIDIA and Apple, TSMC has opted to deploy the most advanced technology at its second wafer fabrication facility in Kumamoto. This marks a significant leap from its initial proposal to produce 7-nanometer chips by the end of 2027.

According to a Thursday report by the Yomiuri Shimbun, in a bid to fuel its expansion, TSMC is planning to ramp up its total investment in the factory located in southern Japan to a staggering 2.6 trillion yen. Nevertheless, sources close to the matter cautioned that TSMC's plans in Japan are still in the nascent stages of deliberation and could be subject to further modifications.
