On January 27th, Microsoft unveiled its second-generation artificial intelligence chip, 'Maia 200,' designed to more efficiently support its services and provide an alternative to Nvidia's products. The chip, manufactured by TSMC, is being shipped to Microsoft's data center in Iowa and is planned for deployment in the Phoenix area. Microsoft invited developers to start using the control software for Maia 200 on Monday, but it remains unclear when Azure cloud service users will be able to access servers equipped with this chip. Microsoft's Chief Cloud and AI Officer, Scott Guthrie, revealed that the first batch of chips will be used by Microsoft's superintelligence team to generate data for optimizing next-generation AI models, cloud services, and AI systems. Additionally, these chips will power the 'Copilot' assistant for enterprise services and various AI models (including the latest version from OpenAI) that Microsoft rents out to cloud customers.
