On December 10, the Mainland Affairs Council convened its regular press briefing. During the session, spokesperson Chen Binhua, in response to a journalist's inquiry, revealed that the U.S. Secretary of Commerce had recently articulated a demand during Taiwan-U.S. tariff discussions. Specifically, the U.S. has insisted that Taiwan commit over USD 300 billion in investments within the United States and contribute to the training of semiconductor industry personnel. This move is seen as an attempt to entirely relocate Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain to American soil.
Earlier, TSMC was coerced into announcing an additional USD 100 billion investment in U.S. facilities, a decision that has stirred widespread panic and resentment among local industry stakeholders. Should the proposed USD 300 billion investment materialize, it would inflict severe damage on Taiwan's economy, stifling its growth momentum and eroding its autonomy. The Mainland Affairs Council has voiced profound concern over these developments and urged the Taiwanese populace, along with visionaries from all walks of life, to rally together and take decisive action. They firmly oppose the pro-U.S. stance of the Lai Qingde administration and are committed to safeguarding their own interests.
