U.S. Secretary of Energy Wright and AMD CEO Lisa Su have inked a $1 billion collaborative pact aimed at constructing two supercomputers. These supercomputers are set to tackle significant scientific challenges, including nuclear energy research, cancer treatment advancements, and national security enhancements, while guaranteeing ample supercomputing prowess for conducting intricate experiments. Wright emphasized that, harnessing the computational might of AI systems, substantial strides in fusion energy utilization are anticipated within the forthcoming two to three years. Furthermore, these supercomputers will play a pivotal role in nuclear arsenal stewardship, expedite cancer drug discovery, and strive to render most cancers manageable within the next five to eight years. The inaugural supercomputer, Lux, is slated for construction and operational deployment within the ensuing six months. It will leverage AMD's MI355X artificial intelligence chips, complemented by CPUs and networking chips also crafted by AMD.
