Samsung Electronics has announced a significant extension of its DDR4 DRAM chip production cycle, now set to continue until December 2026. This decision supersedes the original plan to cease production by the end of 2025. The rationale behind this move stems from the ongoing shortage of DDR4 in the market, coupled with surging prices, and Samsung's slower-than-anticipated advancements in the high-bandwidth memory sector. Additionally, SK Hynix has opted to boost its DDR4 production amidst this scenario. DDR4 prices continue to remain robust, with spot prices soaring by over 100% year-on-year in June 2025, even surpassing those of DDR5. By leveraging its mature production lines, Samsung aims to maintain high profit margins and address the prevailing market uncertainties.
